Taylor Joy revealed that Aussie taxpayers forked out a staggering $183million for Chris Hemsworth Hollywood flop Furiosa when prequel faces difficulties to break even at box office

It has been disclosed that Australian taxpayers contributed an estimated $183 million to the production of the Hollywood film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in Australia. However, the film was unsuccessful at the box office.

Australian taxpayers forked out an estimated $183million to ensure the Hollywood movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was filmed Down Under - amid reports it has bombed at the box office. Pictured: Lead star Chris Hemsworth

Filmed in regional New South Wales, Furiosa was anticipated to be the largest film ever produced in Australia and starred Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Screen New South Wales and Screen Australia have not disclosed the precise amount spent on guaranteeing that the production was filmed in Australia. However, news.com.au has reported that the amount is estimated to be close to $200 million.

Furiosa's total budget was $AU333million, and it has been revealed that more than half of that sum was funded by the Australian taxpayers. Unfortunately, the film has failed to break even at the box office

It is exceedingly costly. The value that the Australian public received for that expenditure is questionable, according to Professor Kevin Sanson, the head of the School of Communication at QUT.

Regrettably, Furiosa’s subpar performance has not met expectations, as the production has yet to achieve profitability, with a total revenue of $160 million (AU$240 million) to date.

The apocalyptic thriller has failed to attract an audience in Australia, as reported by box office website Numero, which reported that it earned only $3.3 million on its inaugural weekend.

The film encountered a comparable fate in the United States, where it was released last month. The Memorial Day holiday weekend, which spans four days, is typically one of the most significant box office events of the year; however, this year’s event was not as successful.

The Memorial Day weekend was the lowest in 29 years at the box office, despite Furiosa’s estimated USD $25.5 million, according to Deadline.

Furiosa generated an average per-screen revenue of USD $6,703 (AU$10,000) during the holiday weekend, with 3,804 theatres screening the film.

The film’s soft début indicates that it faces a considerable challenge, as it has a production budget of USD $168 million, which does not include publicity and advertising.

Furiosa’s debut was anticipated to be in the USD $40 million to USD $50 million range by numerous box office analysts; however, it failed to meet expectations, similar to its competitor, The Fall Guy.
